A new study conducted by Decision Innovation Solutions (DIS) and commissioned by the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation (FPRF), in collaboration with the Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER), the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), and the Pet Food Institute (PFI), underscores the essential role of rendered ingredients in U.S. pet food production.

According to the report, U.S. pet food sales reached $51.7 billion in 2024, with 9.8 million tons of food produced using over 600 ingredients—more than 4 million of which were rendered, upcycled materials that contribute to sustainability and reduce waste.

Rendered ingredients, derived from organ meats, bones, and fat, are processed under high heat to ensure safety and quality. These materials are key sources of protein and fat that improve palatability and deliver essential nutrients to dogs and cats.

“The findings in this report highlight the critical role rendered ingredients play in producing safe, palatable, and sustainable pet food while supporting a circular economy,” said Kent Swisher, President and CEO of FPRF and the North American Renderers Association (NARA). “Without rendering, the pet food industry would struggle to meet nutritional needs while also managing supply chain sustainability and food waste challenges. Rendered ingredients not only provide essential nutrients to pets but also help reduce environmental impact and support American farmers.”

In addition to their nutritional value, rendered ingredients offer a clear environmental benefit. By repurposing materials that would otherwise go to landfills, the rendering process reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports more efficient resource use.

The report also found that pet food manufacturers contributed $13.2 billion to U.S. farm purchases in 2024, reflecting the industry’s significant connection to the agricultural supply chain. Of the 4 million tons of upcycled ingredients used, more than 3 million were incorporated into dog food and over 1 million into cat food.
